Flexible workplace, but unreliable management and sales - Anonymous employee Buckeye Interactive Employee Review

Pros

Working at Buckeye Interactive is like working with a small family. With only ~10 employees, everyone is friendly and open, and everyone works together regularly. The work environment is very open, casual, comfortable, and quiet. Flexible work hours were my favorite part - no need to stress about doctor appointments in the middle of the work day or automobile issues if you make up your hours that morning or evening. Everyone is allowed to work remote one day per week, or 20% of work time. Weekly team lunches are also great for stress management and team bonding. Most clients are either local Ohio businesses or up & coming Central Ohio small businesses, so anyone with an interest in small business will do well here. Because Buckeye Interactive is still a very small, startup-esque agency, each employee has the ability to voice ideas, suggest improvements, and take the lead without much controversy or business politics.

Cons

Part of my salary agreement (along with most other employees' at the company) included a quarterly profit sharing check. I never received a share of the profit while working here, which I believe is because the company finances were still breaking even during my employment, but as an employee who has very little to do with the direct sales processes and meetings, I felt this unfulfilled agreement was extremely unfair and misleading. A downfall of the startup-esque business environment is the lack of HR professionals to keep the business in check. With only one true decision maker (CEO), no other shareholders, and no board to collaborate on business decisions, the business is ultimately run by one person, the CEO, based on what he wants or thinks is best at the time. I believe this has contributed to the stagnant business growth over the past 5 years. Management is NOT always honest or up-front with employees. This raises many concerns when there are fewer than 10 employees in the entire company. The company is not stable enough to succeed with secrets that may lead to business mistakes or bad decisions. Who wants to work for a sneaky CEO? Not me. No benefits. I was told to go through Obamacare. Although I was given a $100 stipend for that insurance cost, my monthly insurance cost was still $300+. Employees were encouraged to join their spouses' insurance plans if possible or their parents' insurance plans if they were under 26 years old.

Pros

4 day workweek, full remote, lots of benefits for the company size. CEO is pretty accessible and is a great guy to be around. Work is pretty varied - you don't get stuck doing the same thing over and over. If you like the pace and variety, it can be a lot of fun.

Cons

Work is deadline based, and those deadlines are often external, so keeping up on your work matters. Fast pace with multiple projects at once can be a problem for some people. The company is growing, so there are a lot of things changing month to month. How much you like your specific manager and clients affects your day to day happiness a lot.

Cons

Entirely remote company so if you enjoy face to face interactions I wouldn’t recommend.
