Pros
The people on my team were friendly.
Cons
It's absolutely mind-boggling to many that this is a $1B company based out of silicon valley (the mecca of amazing cultured companies) with zero knowledge on how to foster an inclusive and competitive company. After a year and a couple months I started to realize that Bye was not for me anymore. I wanted to make it up the ladder & I knew I could but soon realized that it was not worth it. I was a top performer, putting 100% into my work and Byte did not see any value in me. I am sure everyone who works here can relate to that and is the #1 reason why so many people leave. They're aware that there's large turnover yet they don't ask themselves "why?" how are you going to acknowledge a problem and not address it? An extremely simple/free step is to hold an exit interview. This is literally HR 101. LOL. On my last day there was not an exit interview so I’m here to provide the feedback they didn’t care to get: Whether you're new in your career or a seasoned employee your employer should offer one of two things (if not both): The opportunity to learn or the opportunity to earn. Byte has neither of these. Byte can’t even meet the absolute bare minimum to what other companies are doing. There are so many other start up companies that are doing much more for their employees than what Byte is offering. It’s just a paycheck here & you can be replaced at any moment. This job is not rewarding at all. Here is my list: -Top performers get so poorly rewarded. On the Cx team you get squishy toys and pizza. We are adults here.. doing adult work.. this is not enough to keep anyone at Byte. This is equivalent to high school students getting a pizza party... LOL. -They make no effort to retain their most valuable employees & the truth is they don’t care. The specialty teams have zero incentives for performance. -The new PTO structure is garbage. If you take any time off it’s frowned upon. There's no work life balance in any capacity. Speaking of work/life balance lets talk about what the ENTIRE workforce has done recently, they've shifted to remote work during the pandemic. There is SO MUCH research, evidence, and proof that remote work is effective, reduces burnout, increases labor/profit, and retains talent that i'm not even going to go into detail... but what's hilarious about remote work is that it was offered (required?) in California yet NOT offered in Lehi? It's working in one state but they're afraid it wouldn't work in the other? If you don't trust your employees maybe you should recruit better. There are so many things that are simple fixes that are ignored. The pandemic lasted two years and there were zero precautions about working in office. No masks, no hand sanitizer, nothing up until the most recent Omicron outbreak where the entire office got sick. We then were required to come into office but take meetings at our desk? What is the point AT ALL of the office then? The only excuse is "culture" (there is no culture at byte) and "team building/productivity" everything i'm doing in office I can do from home. Remote work is no longer a perk. It's a literal standard in this day/age in both silicon slopes and silicon valley. Byte, start offering remote work. -Seniors get paid less than the speciality teams. They’re doing Team Lead responsibilities but not compensated for it. It's not worth the title & the effort tbh. -No bonuses. No company parties. No team outings. No milestone celebration. The company doesn’t invest in their employees. Again, I was a part of a start up where this was the bare minimum. A specific example is 1 year anniversaries. A company should acknowledge their employee's milestones. This is a simple, free, and bare minimum standard that you could implement at anytime. Byte does not acknowledge you as a person nor employer, no acknowledgment from managers, no shoutouts... absolutely nothing. I’ve been a part of start ups where I’ve been gifted swag to thank me for being a part of the company for a year. I’ve been taken out to lunch or even gifted a simple gift card to appreciate my hard work. -No structure for raises at all. There's no framework for personal growth/role competency to advance. The same excuse all the time about why you can’t get a raise. Speaking of compensation - I was never personally after money, money isn't an issue for me as i'm part of a dual income household. I knew going into byte that they were offering me under-market compensation. Since leaving i've received 2x what I was making at Byte. Byte, if you're not going pay properly to/for professionals - you're not going to be able to recruit properly. You're going to scrape the bottom of the barrel and continue this terrible cycle of turnover. "budget this / budget that" if you're so concerned about budget look into the cost of turnover... this is HUGE. It's proven that retaining is easier than acquiring. There's a significant cost/impact associated with turnover/ramp-up periods. Byte, there's potential here. The branding from a consumer standpoint is excellent we have an image of "fun/friendly" to our consumers. There's so many changes that are simple that could have an outstanding impact on employee retention, growth, and profitability if you took the time to learn, acknowledge, and invest in your employees properly. I hope things change soon because it's clearly a competitive market. Google "The great resignation" Adapt or fail.
