Pros

Like most other reviews your co-workers are the one good aspect to Cargill.

Cons

If Cargill was truly interested in retaining talent they wouldn't be telling their employees there is a salary freeze on for the year simply because profits are down and in essence everyone should be happy to keep their jobs. This would be understandable if Cargill was publically traded and was posting large losses but being that it is privately owned and still posting very healthy profits this is nothing more than an opportunity to exploit the situtation for financial gain. Afterall the need the extra funds to take over more businesses in the downturn not worry about the people who work hard to make theses profits. As has been stated in other reviews compensation is a major weak point, claim they can't pay the same as other higher paying industries but they choose to ignore the reality that everyone regardless of industry is competing for the same talent pool. Hence Cargills higher turnover rate. And those that speak of total compensation, benefits are average. In essence it seems Cargill's philosophy is compensate them just enough to string them along for a while until they leave then bring in new cheap talent. Communications is very poor, management will waste countless hours in meetings upon meetings, ask for feedback and then consistently ignore what the people on the ground floor tell them. Management constantly announces change of plans etc. at the very last minute. A lot of management that has been promoted due to seniority not competency and a lot of favouritism. Feed back is very poor, you will go for 2 years or more with no job review. You will not hear a word about a job well done but as soon as a mistake is made you will not hear the end of it. Have witnessed and experienced countless times of management verbally abusing employees. They are dismissive of labour laws and territorial laws, thinking of them as mere guidelines to be followed when it is convenient. And god help you if you are hurt at work, you will be badgered to come into work to perform 'light workload' but really be expected to carry on as usual and don't you dare try to cover yourself by reporting your injury otherwise the saftey record will look bad. Poor human resources department, can't be trusted to keep things confidential, any complaints/concerns will be promptly reported back to your manager. Ridiculous corporate goals given the slow rate of change or improvements made, just keen on making lots of policy statements and mission goals.

Pros

Pay is good, especially on holidays! you get days off during the week and you work every other weekend

Cons

The schedule is hard, 12 hour days for 1 month then 12 hour nights then switch back. the environment is tough, the work load is heavy. not always the support you need to help you. favoritism, Management can be difficult, sink or swim type of culture, The testing is nearly impossible to get through. In the end you can do a great job in learning the job, if they don't want you, you will be replaced!
