Pros
There is a lot of freedom to choose your business track. As a outside salesman for 2+ years I've had the opportunity to chase my own opportunities and create my own successes and failures. Not a lot of micromanagement considering the vast responsibility. Large market share (in our market) and tons of respect in the industry for our capabilities.
Cons
Tons of unmotivated, uneducated frontline employees. These people should have a training program to adhere to ensure a knowledgeable sales staff. Due to the pay structure there are a lot of people that take advantage and work as little as possible. The pay structure fuels a "work more with less" attitude since fewer employees the fewer people that divvy up profit sharing. Communication from front line to management is non-existent creating a disconnect/failure to adjust to market needs and requests. Terrible system of pay increases/raises even with promotion. You can get promoted twice in 5 years and never see a pay increase.
