Pros

If you want to work for a government entity, the County is a good starting point. Depending on the department, you will learn various clerical and accounting skills. They offer a benefits package, vacation and sick accruals, and the salary is decent. There is room for growth for many entry level positions.

Cons

Management and supervision is poor in many departments. I worked for three different departments over the eight years I worked there and leadership is extremely poor. Thorough job training is not always provided so you end up self-training. Many departments suffer from lack of morale due to poor management. Promotional opportunities are not merit based, and supervisors can hinder you from being promoted within a department. Health insurance premiums are high and increase every year. Retirement package for non-management employees is a mandatory 8% with no match from the county. County funds are mismanaged and not well spent, resulting in many cutbacks in other areas which always affect the employees (layoffs, no pay increases, increased employee paid premiums.

Pros

The people in my department were all great and incredibly friendly, so even as a newcomer temp I felt like part of a true team. They're willing to offer advice and help with anyone else, and the general vibe is always nice. Other than that, communication is good, everyone's kept in the loop day-to-day.

Cons

Communication between departments can be a little strained, but it's pretty rare. Wifi connection in the offices is also prone to being spotty, but it's workable.

Pros

I have a great supervisor and co-workers. Benefits are pretty decent.

Cons

Higher management tends to micro manage and add the most ridiculous tasks on to every day tasks. They tend to make decisions based on what will make them look best, rather than what will helpfully serve our community. It's almost as if they do not know the average customer we are serving, because they have been so far removed from the lower end job classifications.
