Pros

I formed some great relationships with co-workers, we had to build a tight bond to survive working at this company.

Cons

Dark Light is an extremely poor managed company and a toxic work place. The owner is difficult to work with and belittles the employees. The poorly managed projects and inefficiencies of the company are taken out on employees who are left to feel like everything is their fault. Management is not available to nurture or train junior staff, instead they are left to the wolves and receive negative feedback about everything, instead of encouragement. There is no room for growth and salary was really low. There were several occasions were management bullied and harassed employees. I would be cautious about accepting any position at this company.

While it’s disappointing that this reviewer does not have a positive assessment of Dark Light, we don’t think it is representative. We do, however, welcome and appreciate feedback and are always working to improve our processes, as it is integral to creating a better workplace for our team and elevating the important work that we do. In that spirit, I’d like to share some information in response to this review: • Our salaries and other benefits are competitive with other independent lighting design firms (they have to be), and we check against multiple benchmarks, including Glassdoor, to make sure that is the case. • Our absolute goal is for our people to grow, and it would go against our own self interest to hold people back. We have great projects, clients, and teammates, which provide ample opportunities for people to advance as far and as quickly as they are capable. • Like many firms, we faced a lot of challenges during the pandemic, including how to best provide employee feedback in the online work environment, how to give younger staff the mentorship they need, and finding good ways to engage employees who are working remotely. Like many firms, we learned through failure and success along the way. We've worked hard to improve our communication practices - that is, and will always be, an ongoing effort. We've also learned a lot of things that don't work, including some that have surprised us. That doesn't mean we will stop trying. While we want everyone to have a good experience here, no workplace is right for everyone. I hope this reviewer has found a place that is a better fit for them and wish them the best moving forward. Principal was very volatile and had a short fuse. Cliquey Lots of Gossiping and speaking poorly about other people in the industry.
