An okay place to work - Legal Assistant/Paralegal Dutton Law Group Employee Review

Pros

Smaller office environment and generous benefits that you can pick and choose as sort of a cafeteria plan. Workloads are very manageable and it is an 8-5 job that you do not take home with you.

Cons

There is no real management or operational structure to the firm and no sense of direction. Scott Dutton (owner) is out of touch with the day to day operations and his employees yet still wants to maintain an iron grip on everything within the company. The approach to workflow and corporate polices is inconsistent and ham fisted as a result. There is no upward mobility and internal promotions are rare. Paralegals have unreasonable billing requirements in comparison to their workloads and paralegal salaries are tied to billable hours. As a legal professional I cannot recommend DLG for long-term employment.

Pros

I have been with this company over 4.5 years and at two different offices. I am given freedom to work my cases, i.e. no micro-managing, I am given any resource I have asked for, and I have a mentor that has assisted me when encountering something new and providing that guidance I needed. Of course there are areas of improvement. Every company has that. But - you have to work. If I worked my cases and pushed them forward, negotiated smartly, billed properly and contemporaneously, and was professionally aggressive and obtained good results for the client, the company offered me trust. This trust built my confidence as an attorney. I could not be more thankful for my time with them.

Cons

If I had to give a negative it would employee turnover but I account that to people who don't want to work and put forth the effort. If you work, you succeed here. Another negative may be that there is not a clear path of how one can advance or move into others areas of practice if one wants to but this was not a negative so much for me. Every time I asked to take on a one-off case, I was given permission and that also made me grow as an attorney.

Pros

Free downtown parking and that's about it.

Cons

No one knows what's going on. Poorly managed company. Legal timeframes are an option and could jeopardize any attorney licensure. Way too many files for attorneys to handle and unrealistic billing expectations.
