Cons
This company has NEVER hit sales goals. Not one time. They’ve restructured the sales team and changed sales leadership many times, but nothing has changed. They still haven’t been able to show any revenue/customer growth or that they have the potential to go head-to-head with the established veterinary diagnostic companies. Interestingly, the only thing that hasn’t changed is the person (mis)leading the company, the CEO and founder Mark DeCourcey. This company has maybe about 20 actual customers nationwide. With only about 5 of those customers sending in a good amount of revenue because they were conned into believing that they should join Ellie as a POD investor. A majority of their customers send one or two samples every other month. Ellie claims to be an ‘innovative’ company. They have not brought any innovation or “firsts” to the market. How can one be an innovative company when the sales team doesn’t even have access to innovative tools? Harish (CTO) and his team created a practice-facing platform called Nova with features they attempted (poorly) to copy from other diagnostic companies. The whole platform looks like an Excel spreadsheet on steroids. Even one veterinarian/practice owner shared that they didn’t think the platform was technology-forward enough to help him grow his business, so he asked Ellie to let him out of his contract. Most customers realize quickly that they’ve made a mistake by even thinking about switching to Ellie from another lab, shortly after sending in their first sample. if you are a decision-maker at a corporate group, don’t even moisture time meeting with their executive team. Save your hospitals the headache of partnering with an inferior lab. The CEO of this company likes to talk down on people. He tries to make people feel stupid by using jargon that does not apply to their role r what they've learned in college. For example when he talks about investors or anything related to finance - to a non-finance person. He likes to remind people that he is the CEO and that they work for him. I’ve received calls from him as early as 7 AM and as late as 8 PM with him demanding that I turn my video on. That’s ironic because he didn’t even have the balls to have his video on when he called several members of his leadership team to let them know that their positions were being eliminated just a few weeks ago. Ha! one time, I was preparing to jump on a pre-scheduled call with my colleagues when Mark sent me a message asking to connect. I told him I had a meeting that was about to start to discuss XYZ with my colleagues. Do you know what he said? He told me to tell my colleagues that I won't be able to join the meeting (it was scheduled to start in 2 minutes) because he wanted to meet with me. He added, “Tell them I’m the CEO and I have priority.” WHAT KIND OF LEADER SAYS THAT? I repeat - WHAT KIND OF LEADER SAYS THAT? of course, I did not repeat that back to my colleagues verbatim because I didn't want to embarrass him as the CEO of a rinky-dink company. If you are a talented and accomplished individual, this is not the company for you as it will be a waste of your time. If you are an investor looking for the next great thing, keep looking elsewhere.
