The culture of the company has changed in recent years, and not in the ways it needed to. Constant reorgs, layoffs and an emphasis on ‘pay for performance’ (without clear metrics to define that performance) has led to a toxic culture of fear and reduced collaboration among employees.
You will have zero autonomy or ability to create change in this company. Even relatively senior managers are powerless. Decision making is frustratingly slow and concentrated in a handful of people who are divorced from the reality of things on the ground.
The management team increasingly views the workforce as a commodity. Yet at the same time expect Herculean efforts from them to navigate through pointless, disorganized bureaucracy.
Morale is appallingly low. Many long-tenured employees are leaving, taking their knowledge and expertise with them. Others have mentally checked out as they plan their next move.
FM Global manages to combine the downsides of a small company (limited career progression opportunities, opaque processes, rampant nepotism) with few of the upsides. It is an insular, arrogant company that is getting worse by the day. Go in with your eyes open, don’t get fooled into thinking you can change anything, and have an exit plan.
