Pros

Lovely fellow colleagues who really do keep you going.

Cons

Very poor rate of pay for a Baker, considering you are worked around 8-10 hours with no break through the night. Usually never have a proper weekend, often work 6 day weeks due to being under staffed. Holidays were always taken first by senior members, leaving everyone else with no choice of when to take holiday. When others were on holiday all bakers were then on 10 hour shifts and 6 night weeks, as there is no cover. The environment isn't safe, uniform limited. I had 2 top and 2 trousers for a whole year. Wasps, birds and flies get into the bakery due to set up. Machinery and equipment is old and unsafe. Everything is about cutting costs where ever possible, but flogging the baked goods for astonishing prices. Around £4.75 for a large sourdough load, yet the Bakers who make them earn £9.50 an hour with no night premium, bank Holidays worked but no extra, they even get people in on boxing day and work over Christmas. The one time of year where most hospitality businesses give their employees a break.

Pros

really friendly team members free lunch, coffee, cakes etc flexible-ish shift patterns (broadly) kind customer base

Cons

minimum wage, which feels like a slap in the face given how draining the work is really hard to get weekends off unless you pull the manager aside and schedule things far in advance, and even then the online portal will sometimes tell you that the timeslot the manager okay-ed is blocked out, meaning you have to go to the manager directly and nag him to manual input your time off himself VERY physically tiring work only 20 minutes for lunch break managers not proactive about staff being protected from customer entitlement/poor behavior little opportunity for career progression within the company unless you are willing to dedicate all of your time and energy to it management very happy to make unhelpful, easy to introduce surface level changes to workflow, but reluctant to make more meaningful changes if they arent easy to implement quickly (prioritises the appearance of efficiency and hard work over actual efficiency and smart work)

Pros

Lovely team and management. Day shift hours

Cons

Not a good company to work your way up in. Not enough pay for the hours you work - you will always work more than you're contracted.
