GSI Service Group

Is this your company?

Probably the most dysfunctional place I've ever worked - Apprentice Carpenter GSI Service Group Employee Review

Pros

The administrative staff is professional and competent. Liberal construction budget, so we never lacked for tools or materials. Opportunity to do a lot of interesting high-end custom work.

Cons

Project manager worked remotely and rarely had eyes on the project. The owner of the entire organization (who has no hands-on/construction skills whatsoever) micro-managed every aspect of the project and frequently changed his mind, which meant we were always undoing what we'd just done and working in an inefficient manner just to meet his demands. Superintendent when I left basically fell into the role by default, and he was completely and utterly unprepared and incapable. He was a skilled construction foreman, but he lacked long-term planning and leadership skills, to put it kindly. The pay was awful. I started with some relevant experience at $15/hour. I saw at least a dozen journeymen come and go within a month because of the inane working conditions and low pay.

Pros

While I can only speak for the IT department, the experience here has been has been a rewarding experience, primarily due to the high level of autonomy and trust provided by management. I have the freedom to research, test, and deploy solutions that directly improve our operational efficiency without being micromanaged. The company truly values self-directed learning, allowing me to take on complex projects that have significantly expanded my technical skill set. Beyond the work itself, the culture is incredibly welcoming. The team enjoys great catered lunches and frequent after-work activities, which makes for a cohesive and friendly environment.

Cons

The company is experiencing a period of rapid expansion into larger government contracts. This growth has outpaced some existing internal processes, leading to some organizational growing pains that are currently being addressed as we scale.
