No diversity (POC are suffering) - Senior Program Officer Gates Foundation Employee Review

Pros

Salary is high (well, this is Seattle..); no stock options..

Cons

Although the organization publicly champions DEI, the reality on the ground tells a different story. Efforts to diversify often resulted in the overrepresentation of a very specific demographic—white women—while people of color, particularly Black professionals, remained vastly underrepresented, especially in leadership and decision-making roles. Throughout my tenure, I saw talented POC colleagues overlooked for promotions or pushed out entirely, while their work was often absorbed and presented by others—exclusively by white women—without acknowledgment or credit. I personally experienced this erasure, with projects I led being repackaged and presented by others in key meetings, with no recognition of my contribution. The internal culture feels disconnected from the organization’s mission to serve diverse global populations. For a place that prides itself on equity, the internal racial dynamics were surprisingly homogeneous and exclusionary.

Pros

Benefits, Resources (IT, budgets, facilities).Employees perks are embarrassingly privileged when you consider the focus of the foundation.

Cons

Poor leadership that favors group think over competency. Very much a case of emperor’s new clothes across the board. Lack of accountability means goals just change and poor leaders remain in place. The waste and lack of fiscal responsibility is embarrassing and perpetuates laziness and a lack of innovation. There is a lot of discussion about culture and creating a supportive work culture but it falls well short. Am overall very, very disappointed in what had the potential to be so impactful but will fall short. If you want to contribute your talents to an organization that is truly invested in making the world a better place, consider other options, I know I am.
