Interesting job, but not inspiring - Engineer General Dynamics Electric Boat Employee Review

Pros

The company provides an opportunity to work on a very unique product and contribute to the defense of the United States. There are many different disciplines inside the company, so one is able to move around inside the company if another job suits the person better. Being a government contractor with only customer and being the only company that can design submarines, there is a great deal of job security. While management has been cutting back on benefits recently, the benefits package is still better than offered by many other companies. It is probably more in line with large employers.

Cons

A great deal of the advancement opportunities are related to seniority. In many cases employees are advanced to higher salary grades not based upon competence but simply based upon the number of years served. Since the company has a monopoly on submarine design, there is a certain sense of complacency by the company. The management team has been slowly cutting minor benefits to save money, however it has resulted in many good people choosing to leave. The parking situation is horrendous, there are a small number of spaces near the facility, however for those employees that arrive later than 7:30, they must park in a lot 1 mile from the facility and take a school bus to the plant.

Pros

If you're under 30, the pay can be pretty decent starting out. Pay and benefits start when you start training. If you like downtime, there's plenty.

Cons

The leadership is incredibly dysfunctional and everything is behind schedule. The environment is literally toxic and you will not get a respirator, just an N95 mask. Management is understaffed and unsupported. There's a lack of seasoned experienced employees, which means the young people coming in aren't being trained or mentored properly. You might have a 19 year old kid doing stupid and dangerous stuff right next to you and there's no supervision. Sick and vacation time is so small that running out of hours is the #1 way to get fired.
