Pros

Decent vacation compared to my friends but none are engineers so it’s hard to know. The benefits are decent but see below. Good location. Lots of parking since in a suburb. Decent cost of living for a metro area.

Cons

I think GDMS in general does not get how to support software engineers at all. No Linux support at all. Windows boxes on desks that we don’t want. Makeshift Linux systems setup for each contract, bad IT support by engineers whose main job is not support so can’t blame them. I hear constantly about other newer contracts being underbid with required overtime for months on end and too many inexperienced staff. Not sure how true. If your spouse takes GD health insurance even though their employer offers the absolute worst super expensive insurance GD will charge you more than coworkers whose spouses don’t work. GD considers your spouse as taking advantage - stated in the meeting by company president when the policy was announced. The 401k match is not great compared to other places. Constant reorganization but it doesn’t affect the bottom level much.

Pros

Good work life balance Projects matter for our war fighters Most co-workers are competent and dedicated More work than people, and moving to other engineering jobs is possible

Cons

Some numbskulls seem to get into senior positions. A "Consolidation" of buildings is underfunded, poorly planned, and drives chaos. The push to squeeze every nickel of efficiency means that there isn't always money for equipment or team building events (below the VP level).
