"Lateral" transfers to a higher position means more responsibilities and no additional pay. After two years I have gotten 40 cent raise but I have had three position jumps. They tell me I am doing very well and will allow me to train all incoming new grads (who come in making more money than me) but will not pay me for that knowledge because my degree is not in engineering.
