Pros

A team of nice, decent people. The managers are hard working and considerate. People are helpful and supportive upon joining the team- this does not extend to the founders. For a lot of first and second jobbers, this will absolutely be a launchpad: when they move on from Gripped they’ll be grateful wherever they end up and know what not to look for in a company.

Cons

Huge turnover. The founders run the office in a fashion that I thought didn’t exist anymore. Calling out staff on desk. Undermining people publicly and in general displaying unkind and standoffish behaviour. There is a complete lack of flexibility for hybrid working despite what it says on the website- many team members have to be in the office 5 days per week despite what they are advised that they are allowed to do. Many members of the team risk burn out by working way beyond contracted hours to get work completed which is not seen as a problem by the founders. Absences are high and regular across the business as a means to mitigating stress. The biggest problem is that the founders are rarely challenged so think that their way is the highway and that treating people poorly and rewarding them with fruit, biscuits and beer and a monthly team event is enough to convince people that they are working in a balanced environment.

Thanks for taking the time the time to share your experience with us. It’s important that we hear what our team thinks, the good and the not-so-good. It’s great to hear you found the team and managers nice, hardworking, and supportive. We’re proud of the team we have here at Gripped. Now, let’s talk about the tough stuff you mentioned. High turnover this is a tricky one. We’re at about 12% turnover, which honestly, is lower than the industry average (25%-32%). We get even one person leaving can feel like a big deal, especially in a close-knit team like ours. We definitely don’t want anyone feeling called out or undermined. That’s not what we’re about. But, we’re a fast growing business that moves at pace to keep our customers happy. The environment we’ve created is one were everyone can give feedback and while we know some people struggle with feedback we know our team ensure its constructive and delivered in a way that benefits the individual, the group and most importantly our customers. About hybrid working – yep, we do offer it post-probation, and we believe in the magic that happens when we all collaborate in person. But it looks like there might be some confusion about how this policy plays out in real life. We’re on it and will make sure it’s clear for everyone. On the long hours – this is something we’re really conscious of. We get a bit worried IF we see the team working out of hours. There are times when we need to rally for our customers, like out of hours website go-lives, but we always make sure you get that time back in lieu. We know some of our team are passionate and choose to think about work outside of core hours. We love that drive, but we also constantly chat about keeping a healthy balance. We’re all about making sure you don’t feel overworked or unsupported. We've never asked anyone to work beyond their contracted hours, and proactively ask people what's causing them to, if we see it happening. Your suggestion for an anonymous survey is a good idea. We’re keen on getting a pulse check on how everyone’s really feeling. And you’re right about training for our managers – they're the backbone of our team, and we want to make sure they have all the support and skills they need. If you’re up for a chat, we’re here and ready to listen. Your input helps us fine-tune things and make Gripped a better place for everyone. Thanks again for the feedback it helps us grow and get better every day.

Thanks for taking the time to leave a review and for calling out the strengths of the team, we agree they’re talented and supportive. It's worthwhile addressing the cons head on. We don’t celebrate long hours and we don’t expect weekend work. Peaks happen around urgent client issues and are part of agency life, but they’re the exception, not the rule. When extra time is unavoidable, we expect managers to plan better next time and to offer time off in lieu. We actively coach against “always on” behaviour. Our policy is hybrid by default and remote days are standard. We ask people to be in when collaboration or training benefits from it (client workshops, onboarding, quarterly planning), but discouraging working from home is not our policy. If that was your experience in the team, we would have like to know when you were here so we could address it. We’re a small business. We don’t run a traditional HR department and don’t need one at our size. Founders and managers handle people matters directly, with clear 1:1s, feedback cycles and access to external advice when specialist input is required. As we grow, we keep investing in manager development and capacity planning. Sometimes don't work out the way you want, expect or hope for. We’re not perfect, but we keep improving and keep moving forward. If you’re open to it, contact the founders directly so we can understand the specifics behind your comments.
