Pros

Opportunity to lead and make a direct impact in a high-need population. Strong hands-on experience in behavioral health, crisis response, and program operations. Staff are often dedicated and mission-driven, creating moments of meaningful connection with residents. Role builds leadership, resilience, and adaptability quickly.

Cons

Chronic understaffing and high turnover create a high-stress environment and make it difficult to maintain consistency in care and operations. Clinical and leadership support can be inconsistent, especially during high-acuity situations, and expectations often do not align with available resources. Staff concerns are often not heard, and safety can be compromised, limiting the ability to provide a consistently therapeutic environment. There is also a lack of diversity in leadership and elements of a toxic work culture, which impact morale and retention. At times, cases are accepted that appear outside the program’s scope or available resources, further straining staff and impacting quality of care. Limited structure and insufficient training in evidence-based approaches like DBT/CBT further affect staff effectiveness and overall program consistency.
