Pros
There was a good work / life balance. The flexible scheduling allowed my to attend my child's school functions, doctors appointments, etc. Most management cared about the well-being of their employees and they encouraged growth and professional development. As long as you did your job, it was a fun, open, busy place to be.
Cons
It can sometimes be a little like a 'high school hallway' ; meaning there were cliques and it can come down to being a popularity contest. For example, if you had a 'top star' co-worker or a 'patron' manager running campaign for you, you could get into any other department or title you wanted, but if not, your advancement options could be very limited.
