Pros

Transparency from leaders, especially in the early years, was awesome. Things have become more opaque over the years, unfortunately. CEO truly cares about each individual. He ensures the company does right by all employees, especially if you are laid off. Parental leave benefit is amazing.

Cons

This is so hard for me, as I've loved my time at Health Catalyst, but over the last several years things have really started going downhill. The big theme for my cons is that Health Catalyst doesn't seem to know what it wants to be. They've had major pivots every couple years, and the reorgs are seemingly endless. Leadership experience is lacking, especially in the commercial software space. The CEO and COO, who are making all the prioritization decisions, just seem to be making it up as they go to see what sticks. So many projects have been scrapped after spending millions and millions on unchecked projects. I don't believe the CEO or COO have a background in the healthcare space, and the founders have bailed now that they've made their money from the IPO. The C-suite organization is bizarre. For some reason everyone reports up through the COO (even the CTO). The CEO and COO are tight from prior business ventures, and the COO is running essentially unchecked. He is not being held accountable, and no one seems willing to question anything from him, as they've seen that those that do are swiftly removed from the company. The company avoids discussing bad news, so employees rarely get an opportunity to discuss what can be done to improve.

Pros

Great Talent & Culture: The people here are highly capable, collaborative, and committed to helping each other succeed. The partnership between onshore and offshore teams works well and is a real strength. There’s a culture of grit and stability that has helped the company navigate multiple major transitions over the years. Mission-Critical Engineering: The work involves complex data infrastructure that requires deep technical expertise. It can be demanding, but seeing these systems run successfully and support real-world operations is consistently rewarding.

Cons

Wage Compression and Retention Risk: Compensation for tenured and high-performing staff has not kept pace with the market for specialized data engineering and support leadership. In practice, tenure can feel undervalued or even penalized. This creates risk around losing institutional knowledge and operational continuity. Stagnant Career Progression: Contrary to stated expectations, strong performance ratings do not consistently translate into meaningful, market-aligned compensation growth. The process of how compensation is benchmarked lacks clarity in practice, obscuring how compensation decisions are made and what is required to advance.
