Pros

You have books provided, and administrative tasks are generally taken care of for you.

Cons

There is a significant lack of organisation. The academy is split into franchises so the franchises simply do what they want, despite the fact you are interviewed at the brand HQ. Your employer's often treat you like dirt. You are expected to fit your planning into your home life and take home any work you need to complete. Weekends are often taken away from you at late notice so you can run workshops/mock exams, or so some training can be provided. We once went 5 weeks without a weekend because of all of these. Pay is often less than the agreed total in your contract but if you complain about anything the employer will just terminate the contract so it's best to keep quiet and salary is generally paid off the books anyway so there is little to no evidence of this. You may also end up earning less than your colleagues at other academies within the franchise because your boss pays you what they like. Often you are not allowed to even copy resources and if there is a complaint made against you the bosses will always take the side of the parent/student and not the employee. You only have temporary contracts no matter how long you are around for and unfortunately, when the contract expires, there is every chance you may check back in the summer to find them hiring someone else in your job!

Pros

Is a reasonable introduction to teaching English as a foreign language A great 'stepping-stone', to go on to better things as a teacher

Cons

You are not paid for any time you give for training Expected to work Saturdays without pay Part of the salary paid into bank, the rest paid in cash - this created a huge problem for me during Covid, as I was only paid 70% of my 'bank salary'. 10 month temporary contract - unemployed during the summer No progression opportunities Low pay - which is fine to gain experience, but one can earn double per hour as a good private teacher with experience The franchiser and franchisee have completely different ideas on how they want to run things. For example, in my case, the franchiser (Hello Academy) is adamant that you must not speak Spanish in class and therefore don't need Spanish as an English native. However, the local franchisee was not happy that, at that time, I couldn't speak Spanish. The ensuing argument between the franchiser and franchisee meant I was 'the bad guy' caught in the middle. If you're looking to gain teaching experience as a language teacher, it is worth it. If you are looking for a career or a happy work life - best avoid.
