Pros

They were very proactive with their COVID response Work from home options even before COVID They pay their employees on time There are technically benefits, they are just tailored for younger employees that don’t have families and don’t want to pay anything out of pocket. There are still a handful of employees that have not had their souls completely crushed by this hellscape, so it’s always nice to see a smiling face since most of us are beaten and broken down. If you are straight out of college, this will at least give you something to put on your resume. Just don’t plan on staying long term if you are a woman, a POC, or LGBT+. There’s a glass ceiling that’s never going away, and you are going to see a ton of lateral moves before you ever see a legitimate promotion.

Cons

Leadership seems to be largely comprised of total frauds that have managed to capitalize on white privilege and consistently fail-up in life I personally never had a manager out of the Virginia office that didn’t lie to me about significant matters Most department managers (specifically the ones based out of Virginia) are just masters of delegation, and do nothing but take credit for the hard work of the people that they step on There is nothing in place for career pathing, probably because “leadership” only hires cronies from previous work relationships instead of promoting from within The pay is way below average. HR has been gaslighting us all for years and trying to insist that they pay on par with the national average, but in no way can any of us find numbers that support that. The endless surveys, townhalls, team huddles, and video updates are all just propaganda to perpetuate the false narrative that the company is more successful than it is, more concerned with diversity than it actually is, and that employee morale is not in the toilet (which it absolutely is). Work/life balance is not an option all employees. There are two types of employees here: Those who sing their own praise and do nothing but capitalize on the work of others (They reap the rewards), and those who actually do the work (only to be treated as meaningless human capital). The place is full of low-level managers/team leads that are so consumed with personal agendas and vendettas that often takes priority over doing right by our customers. HL keeps acquiring business that it has absolutely no business getting involved with. As a result, it has become a chop-shop for software and has completely bastardized and destroyed some really promising platforms and products. Every time things are headed off a cliff, they restructure the organization. They bring in more outside people for BS leadership positions and it’s like a groundhog’s day of ego stroking and futile initiatives until we’re headed off the cliff again. Then the cycle repeats. Employees drink too much at company events. This includes conferences with our customers. It’s noticed and embarrassing when customers make comments about it. You all clearly cannot handle drinking in mixed company, I’m not going to repeat some the alcohol-fueled antics, but it’s not a safe environment for anyone (especially female employees) when that happens. The products are just plain broken. They barely function, and it's becoming public knowledge that we charge more now for products that are breaking down worse than before. Clients are vocal about feeling ripped off and scammed. It’s impossible to provide proper support, because no matter how hard customer service tries, the products don’t work, so no paying customer will ever be happy with that. The Product Decision Team has become a joke. They are so bored with all the problems, they would rather come up with fun new projects for features that NO ONE IS ASKING FOR instead f tackling the unfun tasks of making the core products actually work. This was a team that went from being a driving force for positive change, to a hollow monument to the inflated egos that lead the PDT The company clearly sees these reviews and knows that their employees are unhappy, but instead of addressing the matter they just post fake 5 star reviews to sweep it under the rug.

Thank you for taking the time to give us such important feedback. I am proud about how our organization responded to COVID and that we avoided laying off a single employee. I am deeply concerned about the issues that you have outlined in your review and am personally going to champion a process to evaluate them. The first step in that process was to review our engagement survey conducted in November 2020. We had an 85% response rate and positive ratings across the board from employees. However, your review highlights for me the potential gaps in our engagement survey process and how we can improve upon it going forward. The second step is to work with an outside consultant to evaluate our engagement process and begin to identify approaches that need to be implemented to ensure we are getting feedback that is comprehensive and actionable. Third, I am going to work with the People Team to review the department engagement plans to ensure we are focusing on the key areas of improvement of our employee experience. Most importantly, I welcome a conversation with you to understand your experiences at Higher Logic and how I can facilitate a great place to work for all employees. Please reach out to me directly at kboyce@higherlogic.com to schedule some time to connect. If you are not comfortable reaching out to me, please contact kdiman@higherlogic.com to schedule a call with her. The more direct feedback we can receive, the faster we can evaluate the best course of action to rectify your experience. Again, I appreciate the time and thoughtfulness that you put into the review and appreciate the insights it has afforded me to improve our culture. Thank you, Kevin

Pros

Remote work flexibility is a genuine perk. Management largely stays out of your way and lets you do your job, benefits are solid, and the people you work alongside are great.

Cons

Pay is already below market rate for the field, which is a problem on its own. Compound that with consistent scope creep — responsibilities and workload steadily increasing without any compensation adjustment, whether through added duties or reduced headcount — and it becomes really hard to justify staying long term. Leadership tends to focus heavily on mistakes rather than recognizing what's going well, which makes it hard to feel valued. Career growth is also a significant pain point. Advancement paths aren't clearly defined, and openings are rare enough that upward mobility feels more like luck than a realistic goal.

Hi there - Thank you for sharing your feedback. I am glad to hear you value the flexibility of remote work, our benefits, and the people you work alongside. I understand compensation is important, and I take feedback on pay seriously. Our framework is built using market data to balance fairness, consistency, and competitiveness across our remote workforce. I also recognize that roles and responsibilities evolve as our business evolves. In the past two years, we have focused on providing the tools, resources, and support people need to reduce repetitive work, focus on higher-value contributions, and continue growing with the company. That evolution should come with clear expectations, meaningful recognition, and visibility into career opportunities. I appreciate you taking the time to share your perspective and will continue to look for ways to strengthen the employee experience. Please feel free to reach out if you’d like to discuss directly. -joanna chief people officer
