Pros

- High level of responsibility and ownership given to employees as trust is earned, not commonly found in the early phases of an investment banking career - Focus spans different areas of software and technology, providing a vast range of exposure to different areas of the industry and a breadth of clients - 100% remote which is uncommon in the industry and provides employee flexibility - Incredible experience talking to founders and CEOs from the early phases (first few months) at the firm. This work is typically reserved for Sr Associates / VPs at bulge bracket banks - Less emphasis on standard industry “pitching” and more focus on building relationships with founders and executing for our amazing clients, who often ‘buy in’ to Horizon’s value proposition from an earlier stage. Time isn’t spent wasted on ‘busy work’ - Access and mentorship from senior bankers / founders of the firm, uncommon at larger banks - Ability to “make your career” and grow within the firm, i.e., the opportunity is what you make of it.

Cons

- Small team which has its great benefits (responsibility, ownership, experience), but can also result in an increased pressure/expectation to perform at a high octane early on in one’s career - The fact that Horizon’s model is so different from the traditional investment banking model requires a different learning curve for new-hires and can be challenging to ramp - Hours can be long in addition to the expectation to always be “on call” and available, however, it makes it easier that the principals are willing to grind together with the Associates. I’ve personally worked with founders on all-nighters before

Pros

Through working with the team at Horizon Partners, I gained valuable hands-on experience, feedback from senior bankers, and the opportunity to learn more about investment banking and the software industry. The internship truly is what you make of it, and through having a positive attitude and strong work ethic, there are countless opportunities to learn and grow professionally.

Cons

We did not work on live deals as much as I would have hoped, but I believe this changes depending on the intern class.

Pros

Horizon is a place where a forward-thinking mentality is not just encouraged but essential for success. The more effort and initiative you put into your work, the more you’ll see the benefits. If you show dedication and responsibility, you’ll be granted significant exposure to the M&A process, from sourcing to pitching to execution. This hands-on experience is invaluable, regardless of where your career takes you. The time spent with senior bankers is especially unique, offering deep insights into what your future career could entail. The team’s transparency and willingness to share their experiences provide a rare and honest perspective that’s hard to find elsewhere. One of the standout aspects of working at Horizon is the opportunity to see the full lifecycle of your work. Understanding where your contributions start and how they are utilized gives you a comprehensive view of the process and encourages you to think about your tasks in a more strategic and impactful way.

Cons

Working remotely is a double-edged sword. On one hand, it offers tremendous freedom—you can avoid the hassle of a daily commute and choose where you want to live, which can significantly improve your work-life balance. However, there are also days when it can feel isolating, making it important to find ways to stay connected with colleagues and maintain a sense of community.
