Pros

KLS was trying a new approach to education which was very exciting to me: mastery learning, advisory for each students, and project-based learning. I also enjoyed the freedom to incorporate new ideas and projects into my teaching. The students are really a great bunch -- no issues you see in some other schools such as drugs etc. It feels like a community with the teachers and students. I felt that we were truly creating good citizens and people in addition to providing quality education. Unfortunately all this is changing.

Cons

After the recent administration change, over the last year, the school has lost 2/3 of its teaching staff. This is NOT due to teachers being unable to handle change or growing pains, as the admin likes to state. The upper admin (includes Board of Directors) seems to also enjoy calling the teachers "unprofessional" because they are leaving. In reality, KLS has become a toxic environment for teachers. They are being systematically pushed out through inflexibility and bullying by the administration. This is unfortunate since the quality of the teaching staff is top notch. Everyone is there because of a love of teaching (since the pay is lower than most public schools in the area). The stress levels are high and teachers are asked to take on a huge workload (more than is reasonable to expect). In general, the teachers don't seem to be valued at the school. The original goals and plan for the school were innovative and exciting. Now the school seems to be slowly sliding into standard school practices. It is feeling more and more like a proving ground for Khan Academy with a focus on using the school to help KA and not the other way around. I often got the feeling that admin looks at teachers as easily replaceable. What they are getting as a result is a new influx of inexperienced and young teachers. The admin is underestimating how much time it takes for a new hire to comprehend how KLS works (it's very different from traditional teaching). You can't just drop a teacher into the middle of things without them feeling overwhelmed and if you add the mastery learning approach on top of that, it's doubly difficult. The value of what a teacher can bring to a classroom is vastly underrated and underestimated.

Khan Lab School Response

Dear Anonymous, Our focus will always be on how we best to work with students as they develop the academic and navigational skills they will need now and in their future. The team is also reimagining education based on their deep teaching expertise. That means, as you say, leading mastery learning, weekly 1:1 advising for each student, and project-based learning. It means that our teachers are given the time they need to meet and to plan - as a whole faculty, within their division, and across their discipline. We are happy to hear you have enjoyed the freedom to incorporate new ideas and projects into your teaching. As a lab school, we continue to improve our program to ensure our students are progressing in all facets of growth, which means incorporating experiences inside and outside of the classroom, as well as online support, including Khan Academy. We would never think to use Khan Academy to replace a teacher - in fact, we have doubled our math teaching team this year to better serve our students. Thank you for expressing your views, positive and negative. As you know we are an evolving school, and we are committed to teacher support, communication, and professional development. Throughout the year we talk to team members to ensure we are listening to them carefully and doing everything to sustain their good work and the strong culture here. We also consistently review teacher pay and find that we are on par with--or even ahead of--peer schools. We treat each of our teachers as a valued professional; when there have been issues, we have shared that feedback directly and privately. As the school had not yet had a formal review process in place, we are working hard to implement one this year. Our new teachers have strong and long-standing teaching experience and are well educated in their fields and in pedagogy. They are enthusiastic about joining our community and many have already connected well with each other, our students, and their families. We are deeply grateful for our team of teachers and thank you for your contributions during your time here. We wish you the best in the future, Rachel

Pros

- Head of School really cares about the school, students and employees. Kim works very hard to balance fairness and accountability with the business of running a school. - Benefits; a lot of thought goes into the benefit design to ensure the best options are available to employees. There are a lot of options to chose from. - Salary; the Head of School put in a lot of time reviewing salary surveys and designing a compensation package that was fair and competitive. The comp policy took the subjective element out of the equation.

Cons

- Growth is never without it's challenges

Pros

Creative school, really devoted teachers. The families are overall kind and supportive, parents want to contribute and help. The teachers are very thoughtful and dedicated. Collaboration and teamwork was always enjoyable. Admin is open to hearing and experiencing different modes of teaching and curriculum.

Cons

Higher up admin play favorites and kind of throw people under the bus. Admin can make things way too personal and it starts to feel disrespectful towards very capable and kind teachers. People were laid off who shouldn't have been, and teachers were made promises that admin did not honor. Such a shame, because the school has awesome potential.
