Great editing position with regular hours - English Editor LiveABC Interactive Corporation Employee Review

1) Reasonable salary 2) Office is near MRT and bus stops.

1) Office is large but quiet. It's really eerie to have 50-60 people working in rows and there is little sound. It's almost like a library. 2) Local and foreign staff do not interact much either. 3) Hours are long and fixed. There is no flex time arrangement where you come in earlier and leave earlier, or come in later and leave later. 4) You get fined for coming in late more than twice a month. When you take sick or unpaid leave, you get deducted both for the hours you've taken off, and simply for taking leave. Taking leave also deducts from your bonus (if you get one). 5) People can be very narrow-minded and not open to discussion or different opinions about the content. For eg. a Chinese editor took exception to a dialogue I wrote in which a guy invites colleagues from different departments to dinner. "Why would someone have dinner with people from other teams and not his own!" hissed this editor to me. I'm still shocked how she found this so strange and offensive.

1) As an English instructor I traveled to a variety of locations throughout northern Taiwan, which was fun and I was well-received everywhere I went, almost like a celebrity. 2) I had the opportunity to do voice-overs and that was also enjoyable. 3) The main office location in Taipei was very convenient to access by both bus and subway. 4) The main office is located in an area near a market with a lot of food vendors, which is good during lunch-time.

1) Management does not favor two-way communication. They did things one way without being open-minded to input. 2) The main office is like a library and there seemed to be a reluctance to socialize with new staff, or a culture that did not help facilitate communication growth between co-workers beyond someone who sat next to you. 3) The manager I had to collaborate with sat about four feet from me but would send me emails instead of discussing something with me in-person. 4) I was told that 90% of my time would be spent going to schools. That percentage turned out to be closer to 50%, with some weeks being stuck in a cubicle at the main office for the entire week. 5) Their publications didn't seem to have a high standard QA process to make sure English typos/errors were kept at an extreme minimum. The content was also taken from CNN and other superficial pop culture sources, instead of publishing more challenging content. 6) They seem to have been infected with the "too big syndrome" where the people at the top of a company pyramid are more focused on outward expansion and quantity, and less focused on developing a 'great' place to work that produces high-quality content.
