Pros

You get paid a decent salary that is comparable to other PhD programs You get a PhD from MIT in the end For my program (Chemistry) guaranteed year-round pay for the entirety of program Decent health insurance (no vision or dental) included for free

Cons

Dental insurance costs extra and no vision insurance available Working expectations are high and largely dependent on your PI with no accountability

Pros

High quality core facilities and well resourced labs. Countless brilliant colleagues who can serve as mentors and collaborators

Cons

Students and Postdocs are expensive due to high overhead, so unreasonably high productivity is often expected compared to other institutions. PIs are typically stretched very thin. Most departments/labs are very space limited which makes it harder to do safe and productive research.
