Nepotism and Dysfunction - 3D Modeler Martinez Geospatial Employee Review

Pros

Very interesting work in laser scanning and 3D modeling. Regular exposure to new technology. Most employees are friendly when they are not stretched thin and overworked.

Cons

This small family owned company has a toxic company culture. Pervasive nepotism creates a frustrating amount of inequity among employees. The practice of leadership hiring family members and friends has left other employees isolated and voiceless. Obvious standards of behavior and work ethic are simply abandoned when family members choose to blatantly ignore company policies. The dysfunction originates at the top with the president/owner and trickles down. Lower management spends a grand percentage of their time fixing problems created by the president/owner. This results in active and passive aggression, from exasperated managers, towards employees. Management takes an ‘Us vs. Them’ attitude towards employees which results in, non-family member, employees being treated disrespectfully. Poor leadership and poor project planning results in perpetual mandatory overtime. Expect mandatory 50 hour weeks as the norm. Expect declined vacation requests. Expect to work holiday weekends. Expect to work 15-20 days in a row without a day off. Expect to put in 60-70 hour weeks when the project inevitably falls behind due to poor project management. Expect grief if you want to take time off. Don’t expect any appreciation or acknowledgement from management. “We all have to make sacrifices.” –Steve Martinez, President/Owner.

Pros

This company has a lot of fascinating technology in several different areas. If you come in with basic skills and prove you're trainable they're willing to cross train in multiple areas which keeps things interesting. I started with an entry level job and was able to prove myself, which came with several pay increases. Good benefits with paid vacation and holidays, medical, dental, and 401K matching. Also, the past two years in a row all employees got a 9% bonus check at the end of the year. Decent flexibility with personal & family matters. Relaxed atmosphere. Quite a few newer young people on staff which keeps things fresh and fun.

Cons

Everyone is expected to work the evening shift at some point. Smaller company so there aren't an abundance of management level positions to work up to.
