Pros
I love working here. It feels like something important is happening. I know this is true of all schools, but especially of Mason. The teachers are invested in the classics and history, and I think it makes all the difference. They really try to plumb the depths of their content areas for the kids. It's a rewarding collegiate environment and very positive. Students are generally well-mannered and respectful, both to their peers and to the teachers. Administration puts substantial effort into supporting instructional staff. They do many observations, especially for new teachers, and respect your professional opinion when engaged in discussions with parents. It's refreshing to have a whole team who will go to bat for you when confronted by a parent who makes excuses for their children's shortcomings. That said, most parents who send their kids here are fantastic. They take responsibility for their children's behavior and really love the academics. I've been teaching here since the school opened and I must say it has developed into a special kind of institution.
Cons
It's not a job for the faint of heart. Some first year teachers have trouble learning how to discipline effectively and plan for lessons. The pay-off is worth the investment, but there is a learning curve.
