Pros

Connections. You meet execs and government reps who could help you escape later. They have a great brand in their travel dept. but it is limited in scope and impact.

Cons

Unable to recognize good business practices or sales. Team work or doing anything outside of your assigned tiny 1970s box is unacceptable. You are basically the Governor's job-creation WITH incentives counting puppets, but never do you count jobs lost or organic growth, or companies that leave. Real results aren't important. It's all about the sound bite. Thinking about this or anything you are doing that is questionable is highly discouraged. Exception being if you want to compliment the Governor; then speaking up is encouraged.

Pros

Work-life balance was valued and exceptional. The work and mission was meaningful and you worked with really bright and intelligent peers who really care about the mission of the organization. This factor alone made the culture of the organization unique and great. The job itself was also great in that you are put in positions where you had to rise up to the challenge: representing the state and Governor's office, learning to work with various types of local governments, and exposure to working directly with top companies and C-suites. The work experience itself was good for this reason. Good benefits.

Cons

Limited career growth in terms of pay and moving up the ladder. Even though the work is not supposed to be political, the organization can be political. Like most state agencies, top leadership is replaced with new administration so you should be prepared for changes every 4-8 years.
