Pros
Great culture, made up of caring, positive, and genuine people and people-focused processes. Ensuring that team members are treated well is a priority along with delivering a product with that same ambitious and generous mindset.
Along with this comes an attractive and nurturing place to work for talented and hard working people. Discussion is always valued along with sharing opinions, learning, and teaching. And from this has sprung cool things, such as the hackathons, organisation and management brainstorms, and meetup hosting.
Ultimately, working at Memrise is creative, rewarding, communal, and fast-paced. You'll learn a lot from a lot of great peers and be encouraged to take up responsibilities and develop yourself.
Cons
Conflict has been and will be handled poorly, and both the amount and severity of conflict has been increasing. Which has been a part of the cause for an unfortunate set of events throughout 2019. Ultimately, both the changes and changing make-up of the company have been difficult for everyone.
The company has grown really quickly recently and elements of its culture and management can generate conflict and poor decision-making. One way this has been felt is in not meeting the company's ambitions this year, leading to people feeling frustrated and a handful of difficult decisions that have had a huge impact on individual employees.
When the company needs grow and needs to learn to grow, it's tough when the people taking the brunt of the impact are employees, friends, and colleagues.
At the end, they are caring employers and friends, and there are many reasons to be hopeful that the lessons have been learned.
