Pros

The other employees were nice and if you enjoy crafts this is a nice place.

Cons

The Michael's I worked at was run sloppily. Cashiers were barely paid above minimum wage and were expected to check out customers, handle returns, put returns on the return cart, put away all the returns, get the carts from the parking lot, put all carts and baskets back on the other side of the store, keep the entire front end clean including shelves near us, assist customers in finding and determine what to use, and answer the phones no matter how busy we were. Many nights it was just me and one manager closing and we were told to do half of the work for the morning stock crew so they wouldn't have to show up early. If you had a 7-8 hour shift you had to wait for the lines to calm down and ask for your break or you wouldnt get one. If it stayed busy you probably stayed up front the entire shift. I called in with pink eye (which had swollen my eye shut and was oozing) and was told seasonal employees were not allowed to call in sick so my actions were unacceptable. They then took me off the schedule for the next week and I assume they will be letting me go. I was hired on for 18-23 hours a week and after Christmas barely had 9 hours a week despite having the 3rd highest rewards numbers in the store. The biggest thing that decides your hours is if you can get people phone numbers as a part of the rewards program, if you're getting less than 65% you can get cut to 4 hours a week.

Pros

Relatively easy job, lots to keep you busy and moving if you hate a stationary job. Easy to keep moving up from this role. The right team will make this your favourite role! Perfect job if you enjoy being the solution for everyday problems (just get your pay's worth).

Cons

Far too many hats, as Michaels tends to understaff. Can be a real slog with lack of support for training and followup coachings for cashiers. Hard to recommend this job long-term due to typically low entry pay, and pay gaps in similar management roles caused by company decisions over the last half decade or so.
