A Hostile, Uncaring, and Deceptive Workplace – Midlands Heart Needs a Wake-Up Call - Communications Officer Midland Heart Employee Review

Pros

Not much positives other than decent office space.

Cons

My time at Midlands Heart was utterly exhausting, demoralising, and completely unsupportive. Management shows no interest in understanding or accommodating conditions that affect ethnic minorities, and the culture of whitewashing real issues is pervasive. Legitimate concerns are dismissed, while the environment actively protects managers who lie to cover their own mistakes rather than addressing problems transparently. It’s no wonder they have a high staff turnover. Teams who try to stick together are swallowed by a bullying culture where gossip, undermining, and exclusion are the norm. Talent, dedication, and professionalism are irrelevant in an environment dominated by fear, hostility, and deceit. Comments and behaviour from management were not just inappropriate—they were aggressive, manipulative, and designed to intimidate. Midlands Heart urgently needs to confront its culture of dishonesty, discrimination, and bullying before more capable professionals are worn down and forced out. Until then, this is a workplace to avoid at all costs.

Thank you for submitting your review. It’s extremely rare to read our culture described as hostile, uncaring and deceptive, as these aren’t behaviours commonly associated with Midland Heart. Like all responsible businesses, matters of concern are addressed and discussed. We have an extremely low staff turnover and alongside that, high engagement as shown through our 2025 Colleague Survey and as part of our recent Sunday Times Best Places to Work accreditation. If you want to raise anything further please email craig.knapper@midlandheart.org.uk

Thank you for sharing your feedback with us and for recognising the work we’ve been doing to collaborate with our colleagues to continue building inclusive working environment where everyone feels supported to thrive in their career. Along with providing specialist training for our managers so they are well equipped to support their teams, we seek regular feedback through our employee body, our Colleague Champions, who are always on hand to listen to feedback from colleagues and share with senior leaders. We also encourage colleagues to take part in our annual b-heard survey, and we’re delighted to say we were named by Best Companies as one of the top 50 large companies in the UK to work for in 2023 based on their feedback in our most recent survey. Following the feedback, we’ve launched our Your Voice in Action campaign, continuing to take action on the important issues that matter to our colleagues as highlighted in the survey. We’re always open to new ideas on how we can develop our offering and working environment, and we’d encourage you to share any ideas with us by emailing AskHR@MidlandHeart.org.uk.
