Pros

Working a government job has it's perks. Lots of vacation time and paid holidays. Most co-workers were great to work with. The health insurance used to be very good but got very expensive over the years.

Cons

I worked my way up but no one gets "promoted", you have to apply for the position and be considered with all other applicants. When the manager position that I had been working years toward finally opened up I was told I didn't have sufficient formal education for the position, even though there were many other non college graduates in management, and I had been the interim manager for 8 months. Then my division was assimilated with an existing division and the manager had no experience with IT, but had a college degree in a completely different field. He was arrogant and untrustworthy. He took all the accolades for himself and any problems were our fault. He didn't communicate well, and was overall a very poor manager. The county upper management was just a "good ole boys club" for years but some good changes have been made in that regard. Pay was unfair. I had been there for over 10 years and finally gotten a new title and pay increase to fit what I had already been doing for years. But the pay increase started me at the beginning level instead of the higher level which would have reflected my years of service. A brand new employee was hired at the exact same rate of pay. A hiring freeze made it difficult to accomplish day to day tasks. When someone left, we were expected to do that person's work also. That practice is still going on.

Pros

If you want a job that is more than just about the pay, and have no special education, consider a career in Corrections. Jobs are available everywhere, and always pay better than average. The work is not physically demanding, work environment is clean and climate controlled (usually). You meet the greatest people when you work in law enforcement! Mohave County was great to work for supervisors are fair, but demanding and always approachable.

Cons

You also work with the most terrible people. Murders, rapists', gang members who will try to manipulate and control you anyway they can. To be successful you must always be professional, and never deviate from policies because they are put there to protect you. At times the work can get boring. At other times it can be very stressful and be ready to respond quickly to changing situations. There will be times you will have to fight to protect yourself, fellow staff members or inmates. Overtime is always available and often mandatory.

Pros

Decent benefits, I made some good friends. Good schedule.

Cons

All equipment was third-hard and busted down, decrepit and poorly maintained buildings, bullies and cliques and OH SO MUCH GOSSIP, HR that doesn't adhere to FLMA and ADA laws, unfair work loads for unreasonable pay.
