Pros

I liked working at MoveHQ things were going well. There was a good team atmosphere. We were working on products and developing as development teams should.

Cons

There was a company meeting scheduled via an emailed calendar invite late on September 26th, 2018. On September 27th, 2018 Management explained that there were going to be layoffs with no severance, no warning or heads-up at all. It is also a company policy that you are to forgo any PTO hours upon termination of employment (most companies will pay out PTO upon termination, as it is an earned benefit). Everyone proceeded to freak out until they were called into the office one at a time to be read their fate. When it was over, a significant amount of the Columbus office was laid off. I can't speak to the St. Louis office, but I can imagine that it wasn't much better of a situation out there.

MoveHQ Response
7y
MoveHQ appreciates all of our employees, both present and past, and their contributions to the success of the company and all employees. These types of reorganizations are difficult for everyone involved and not something the company takes lightly. Any employees who were released were due to an elimination of their role due to the reorganization or they were released due to not meeting performance and/or conduct expectations. All employees who were released due to elimination of their role were offered severance. Employees who were released due to performance and/or conduct issues were not offered severance. Each employee was provided their individual reason for release at the time management met with them individually. It is correct that it is the policy of the company to not pay out any unused PTO at time of termination. This is not unique to MoveHQ. While we would have liked to have provided advance notification to those impacted it simply was not feasible.

Pros

Compensation is excellent. Benefits are outstanding. The people are helpful to newcomers. There was constant encouragement from management to learn more and grow as a Software Engineer. Small wins are celebrated. I still talk to my former coworkers all the time. It felt like everyone in management had an open door. I could just hit up anyone in the chain of command on Slack with comments/questions/concerns and felt heard.

Cons

I felt as though I always needed to be looking for other work because every 3 months or so there would be another round of layoffs for one reason or another. When people from HR magically disappeared and found other jobs, the canary in the coal mine died.
