Pros

I have worked at two other hospitals in the city and this one has been the best by far. Generally good patient to nurse ratios, they try their best Excellent benefits Pay is good and they’re always reevaluating. There’s also clinical ladder promotions you can work for that increase your salary decently. Staff is well educated and a lot are back in school because of the excellent NYU tuition reimbursement program Leadership listens and is always trying to improve quality Most nurse leaders I’ve met are very personable and easy to talk to. No egos here! (However the MD and APP side is another story) Lots of opportunities for professional growth within the organization. You can pretty much do anything and can transfer to any units within the organization as long as you have been one year at your current position. Kimmel Pavilion is GORGEOUS to work in and honestly has made a huge impact on my well being. Floor to ceiling windows in the patient rooms and wonderful views of the Empire State Building and East River. Feels luxurious.

Cons

They somehow can’t seem to retain experienced nurses at the bedside They hire all new staff (usually new grads) for nightshift and move current staff to dayshift if a position becomes available. This results in a hugely unbalanced skill set on night shift. If you want to work in an ICU that is strictly ICU and high acuity all the time, you only have MICU or SICU as an option. CVICU and CCU are bizarre mixed acuity units that can be very unfulfilling if you want the challenge of ICU. If you’re a telemetry or cardiac step down nurse, you also have to do ICU here which stresses a lot of people out who would be wonderful acute care nurses but don’t want the stress of having ICU patients as well. Travel nurses hate their lives here. The hospital hires them for the float pool and they’re thrown all over the place. Most are ICU nurses but when floated to the “ICUs” they usually get acute patients because the unit gives the ICU patients to their staff. A lot of nurse practitioners can be toxic and don’t know how to educate the bedside nurses without being condescending. Unfortunately it’s the same everywhere and not NYU specific. However, considering most NPs here went to NYU I would hope they add something to their training that focuses on this a bit better.

Pros

Pay raise for good performance Great and free healthcare for employees

Cons

Veterans of the corporation whether they be your coworkers or management is trash. Not all leadership is bad just those that have been here over a decade. There is a certain culture of tenure over actually practical solution, I actually silently quit May 2026 because of it.
