Pros

The downtown location is great, and the publisher is very friendly. They have a unique product that no one else offers in the area. They offer local news coverage.

Cons

The managers do a poor job of developing their employees. There are a lot of poor performers throughout the organization. They tend to keep poor performers rather than managing them out through active conversations. The building, office equipment, and technology they provide to their employees is very poor. The building is really in disrepair. The office, bathrooms, and furniture are unkempt. The technology is very out of date. They pride themselves as a digital media company, but they don't pay for cell phone service, they don't provide lap tops or ipads to their sales representatives, reporters, or managers. They don't give their employees the tools to compete in a digital age. There are no employee development plans, or training budget. The pay is very low, and the amount of holidays, vacation, and benefits are poor. The benefits are very expensive.

Napa Valley Register Response

While negative, this review was accurate for the most part at the time it was written. The good news is, three years later, we have taken the feedback to heart and are a dramatically transformed enterprise. First of all, our new Human Resources director in 2015 was tasked with developing regular training, and leading managers to focus on more consistent employee feedback and development. Also, we have regular employee events, for example we recently hosted a wine education seminar hosted by the Napa Valley Vintners Association. Not only was it a fun event, it was educational and useful for the local media that covers the premier wine region of the world. To celebrate our recent success in achieving our annual fiscal budget we hosted a daylong celebration and presented employees with unique “throwback” vintage shirts to celebrate our founding in 1863. These are just two examples. We moved into brand new offices in 2016 (see photos on this page) and have become a model for the industry for equipping our employees with the technology they need in order to do their jobs in the 21st century, either in the office or out in the field. We appreciate all feedback – especially if it can help us improve.
