Pros

NI gave its employees the opportunity to grow in a million directions and to do it fast, if the employee had the drive to do so. Coworkers tended to be sociable and outgoing, resulting in an atmosphere where it was hard not to find at least a few people you got along with. The company had a strong focus on culture (but not always to great success).

Cons

While the company focused on culture, they often failed. Parties and allowing "silliness" to occur in the office is only part of a strong culture. Preventing sophomoric behavior and lewd jokes would go a long way to improve culture. Additionally, having the leadership actually mingle and show concern for the entire staff would go a long way. The company isn't that big yet, there's no excuse for leaders to not know everyone's name. A lack of clarity is apparent. It's been mentioned before, and raised by employees many times, but due to any number of reasons, clarification on the direction of the company wasn't happening. Diversity is a real issue, not a laughing matter. I don't think anyone there was actively anti-diversity, but they clearly were not concerned with increasing the diversity of the company. Leadership should not be afraid of questions from the employees. While they officially had an open door policy, it wasn't uncommon for that door to be shut with obfuscation or misdirection. And while it may be uncomfortable to answer questions in front of the entire company, if it is asked it should not be pushed away, denied, or laughed at. Embrace that your employees have a legitimate question and a serious answer would go miles to keeping employees happy. Lay offs are not unique to NI. They happen, particularly in the circumstances that NI faced. But it seems the messaging was not consistent here. Some employees listed as current on this site are saying that poor performing employees were let go. Yet that was not why employees were let go. If leadership is sending the message that the employees that were laid off were laid off for reasons other than they disclosed to the laid off employees, that is a clear deception.

Cons

Communication could improve, but it's not bad.

Pros

Across the board there are fantastic, smart, and dedicated people throughout the organization. A lot of turnover that has happened has had a strongly positive effect. The strategic partnerships that the company has in place with Group M and Twitter put the company in an unparalleled position to own the marketplace in a few years. The core technology is truly differentiated and very difficult to recreate without the partnerships we have in place. Offices are comfortable and the perks are good. Generous time off policy and very flexible managers that accommodate home life needs in balance with work. Compensation levels are reasonable to generous.

Cons

People that leave seem to be exceptionally bitter and disingenuous about their time at NI. We still are battling a lot of the challenges of early stage companies because our industry and products are so new. Yet people don't necessarily join with the expectations of working at a startup anymore given how big we are and how long we have been around. Some hires just don't work out because they have difficulty adapting to an environment that has to be fluid and responsive to a rapidly changing industry.
