Pros
Nidec U.S. Motors is one of only a few major industries in Mena Arkansas. The pay is better than most local alternatives. Night shift receives 17% more pay per hour. There is "some" room for advancement which is better than many businesses. Regular seniority raises every 3 months for the first 2-3 years. Relatively moderate temperature in most of the plant year-round. Limited phone use is permitted in the plant but overuse will be punished. 401k, insurance, early access to paid Vacation and Holidays. Coworker culture is more positive than most other jobs I have done. Most people are relatively friendly and cooperative although there are exceptions. It is generally not necessary to ask for permission to go to the bathroom unlike at some other jobs.
Cons
Some work is dangerous. Some work is painful. Some work is highly repetitive. Some areas get very hot and fumy. Some managers are unpleasant. It is difficult to get many positions without competitive credentials and experience. Management requires at least 6 months experience in a position before allowing you to move and even after that they are reluctant to approve transfers. Attendance policy is strict. 6 point limit. Each point falls off after 1 year. 1 minute late is a half point. Employees encouraged to clock in 15 minutes early but are not paid until the official shift period begins. Employees are also not paid for staying up to 15 minutes past the end of the shift period. Breaks are acceptable for 1st shift but 2nd and 3rd shift get only one 20 minute break all night. Vacation policy is mediocre for long term employment. 401k match has sub-par limit of 3%. Mandatory schedule changes are common. 2nd and 3rd shift employees are not always included in major plant meetings. Work load varies a lot from day to day. Some days may be spent doing excessive cleaning because there is no regular work to do. Training provided to new employees is insufficient for ensuring safety and quality.
