A good starting job for recent grads - Marketing Specialist Northern Virginia Magazine Employee Review

Pros

There's some creativity to be had so you can probably be buoyed along by that for a little while before the crippling depression sets in.

Cons

Don't expect to get paid much. Plus, benefits are pretty much non-existent and you start with only a week vacation. Management doesn't much care if you're happy in your position or not. You can also expect to work weekends at events for no additional compensation, overtime, bonuses, benefit or incentive. Also, the marketing department is responsible for Specialicious (NoVA Mag's daily deal site) which is essentially a completely different 24/7 job. Hard to take vacations or even sick days. On the other hand, if you need a job right out of college, this is probably a good place to start. Set your expectations low and you won't be disappointed.

Pros

Uncapped commissions and no territories, you can sell to anyone that is not sold or being worked. First place I've worked with multiple incoming sales leads given weekly. Support staff does all the heavy lifting for collecting money and ad approval. All I had to do is sell ads. Many warm leads created through winner lists given to the sales team. Commissions don't change when resigning clients, true book of business sales. The magazine has a huge voice in the community.

Cons

Its a lot of calling, but that's sales.
