Tight Budgets, Empty Promises, Poor Leadership - Staff Accountant PBMares Employee Review

Pros

The experience can be useful for building your résumé, and the other staff accountants were one of the few bright spots. Most of the people at that level were friendly, supportive, and easy to work with, which made the job more bearable on a day-to-day basis.

Cons

This firm talks a lot about support, growth, and helping employees succeed, but my experience was the exact opposite. Management and the partners were terrible. The culture felt punitive, not supportive, and it seemed like they were always looking for someone to blame instead of actually addressing problems fairly. One mistake could define you forever, even when the issue was caused by the client. Leadership would say they were there to help, but in reality they would throw you under the bus the second it became convenient. They also lead employees on with promotions and goals, and when those goals are finally met, the goal posts seem to move. Budgets were absurdly tight, expectations were unrealistic, and staff were effectively expected to work 55-hour weeks just to meet hour goals. I was let go without notice, never put on a PIP, and never given a genuine chance to correct anything. I had also told my people manager I was planning to have a child, and about a month later I was terminated, which made the whole situation feel even worse. This was one of the clearest examples I have seen of leadership saying the right things while doing the exact opposite.

Pros

Decent Salary, other staff level co-workers are great

Cons

Reviews are a broken record, if you make one mistake, don't expect for it to ever be forgotten. No regards for employee satisfaction, management is greed driven and doesn't like criticism. Feels like there is no HR department and there is no way to access items on your own, and you need to ask your people manager/upper manager for HR support. PTO doesn't feel relaxing. Focus on charge hours and budgets creates an environment for eating hours and is extremely toxic. Culture is toxic but forces rose-colored glasses on it to interns and new hires. Since I joined, three other coworkers have left due to the issues mentioned above.
