Pros
The customers and their furry children are the best part. Helping animals gain access to healthier and sustainable products drove me to come to work every day. I loved being able to promote products that aligned with me ethicially. Switching a dog from an unhealthy food to a good one and hearing positive feedback felt amazing. As a full time employee I was given sick leave and vacation days. I'd never had access to that, so that was pleasant. My manager was excellent and kept my job as easy as possible. She was the only reason I stayed as long as I did.
Cons
Pet Pros expects very knowledgeable staff and customer service for baseline pay. They underestimate the amount of work and attention that their employees give. There was an issue with a rat at my store. It took corporate over six weeks to get Orkin out to set up traps after we reported evidence of it to them. This was a HUGE violation of my health and safety-not to mention the customers. Many of Pet Pros customers are children, elderly people with compromised immune systems, and even sick or sensitive pets. They exposed all of us to deadly disease and did not express any concern or empathy for our position. Rat feces was dumped on my head when moving a bucket down from a high spot. A customer brought up a can of dog food with rat droppings on top of it. I cleaned pee off the door handles many times. The action taken took far too long to occur at the corporate levels. My manager had us keeping a log, making note of every sighting, and taking pictures-I know that she did everything in her power to keep our store sanitary and disease free. When offered health insurance I was given less than 36 hours to make a decision about whether I wanted it or not. This is not enough time to go through such extensive information and to make such an important decision. I definitely feel that corporate does not care about my well being-and maybe not even their customers well being. They are just another retail chain out to make a buck at the expense of others. I would not recommend this to someone unless you're trying to get into the pet industry. Go work for Mud Bay instead.
