Pros

If you like having nothing to do because of red tape, waiting vendors, and the general glacial pace of government, this place is great.

Cons

Terrible management, mired in nepotism and incompetence. Management is regressive, openly sexist and racist, and adversarial. Mean Girls levels of cliquey drama-fueled water cooler gossip. Except for the maintenance people who just seem to want to do their jobs and go home.

Pros

Benefits are good. Amount of vacation days increases over time, there is longevity pay (although minimal), State retirement plan (PERF). Also options for Flex Spending, for vision and health insurance and annuity savings (unmatched), Work hours are good for employees. For most departments 8:30 am - 4:30 pm with an hour for lunch. Public safety employees work varying hours. Breaks vary by department.

Cons

These Cons pertain to the department I work for. There are many different departments within Porter County Government and each operates independently and differently. The tone of the different offices are set by the department heads, so efficiency and employee satisfaction varies greatly from office to office. Unlike management in the private sector, the department head is not accountable for financial prudence or treatment of employees. There are too many employees doing too little work and . no process in place for objective employee review. There are no written work standards or behavior policies in place. As a result favoritism is rampant. Employees who quietly work hard are treated poorly, with no remedial avenues in place. The less productive and inept employees "play" the department head and are treated well. Most employees are frustrated/disgruntled.
