Difficult Work Culture - AmeriCorps Member Volunteer ReSOURCE Employee Review

Unfortunately, my experiences with the wonderful people there were largely overshadowed by some really complicated dynamics within the company. Gossip was rampant, beyond typical office gossip. People’s personal lives were frequently up for discussion, even when people indicated they were uncomfortable. There were false rumors spread, some by people in positions of power over me, that I was romantically involved with multiple colleagues at different times. I expressed my discomfort with this, but it continued. Many members of this company regularly sexually harassed those they were in positions of power over. This included: inappropriate comments/questions about weight, appearance, relationship status, favoritism/withholding work benefits based on romantic reciprocation, and insinuating colleagues were romantically involved in group settings to embarrass them. Many of us had confidential information about our colleagues medical and mental health issues inappropriately disclosed to us by our supervisors. There were two different people in positions of power over me who would regularly contact me to do aspects of their jobs for them. They also regularly screamed at me and others over issues out of our control. Because no one who witnessed these instances stood up for me, I did not feel I could report them. My direct supervisor asked me about assumptions she had made about a private health matter I was dealing with in an open office setting where others could hear. This impeded my ability to feel comfortable coming into work for the remainder of my contract.
