Pros
- Pay was good for the role I was in, especially as I was able to work remotely. Although they're pushing to reduce remote working now. - Leads were all really friendly and helpful. Overall my experience with co-workers was very positive, the company is full of people who are helpful and really dedicated to the projects. I have zero complaints about the culture or workforce outside of senior leadership. - I personally didn't have any tough deadlines or micromanagement in my role, overall working conditions were fairly relaxed and there was a good work/life balance. - Benefits were good - There are some interesting projects to work on, playtesting was always fun - Had recently introduced clear progression for each role which was based on skillset, not merely on years worked
Cons
- My role was made redundant after explicit promises from leadership that there would be no job losses and that we were in a good financial position, this has happened across multiple teams afaik. The explanation I was given for my job being made redundant was vague, and leadership was unwilling to transition me into adjacent roles where I could continue my work. Jason Kingsley recently was quoted in PCGamer saying that Rebellion has had no layoffs, which is just completely untrue. If staff are going to be cut they need to deal with it honestly and openly. It is insulting to be laid off and then see the CEO praising their leadership for avoiding layoffs. - The Asura engine is outdated and often a chore to work with. Basic features are missing, it's way behind industry standards. Artists have to rely on outdated workflows and workarounds to make up for it. My general feeling is that the games and artists are being held back by the engine, as well as needlessly adding extra work to projects. - Management makes decisions behind closed doors without much explanation to workers. Management is out of touch with what leads and artists are experiencing, despite micromanagement from senior leadership. - Raises were cancelled for a long time, and by the time I was let go it didn't seem they'd be returning soon. Also, there is no kind of bonus or reward for a game performing well.
