Great Workplace with non-Competitive Pay - Anonymous employee Renaissance Learning Employee Review

Pros

Our workplace is filled with passionate and smart people, many of us former teachers, who know our stuff and love our work. The benefits package is good and getting better, we have flexible hours, and we can work from home when needed. The atmosphere is fun, and the people here are great to work with. We are proud of our work, and rightfully so.

Cons

As a satellite office, we feel disconnected from the main office in Wisconsin. This manifests itself in many ways, mainly in our pocketbooks. The job pays much less than comparable positions in the area, and we have lost many talented people over the years because of it. If it weren't for the fear of the non-compete agreement we are all required to sign when we are hired, they would probably lose many more. They have tried to address this through the years with pay raises, but a 4% annual pay raise in an area where home prices alone rise 10% annually doesn't cut it. Add to this a glass ceiling that prevents many of us from rising higher in the corporate structure and many feel trapped. We also often feel sidelined when decisions are made, as if our ideas and needs aren't considered, and are called on to do last-minute work (or rework) that we have warned management about, but our warnings have been ignored. Our tools get steadily worse, but fixing them is never a priority, so we constantly learn to work around bugs and poor user design. Most of us keep a good attitude regardless of this, but low pay and a feeling of marginalization is a recipe for long-term disaster.

Renaissance Learning Response

I appreciate you writing this thoughtful review of your experience at Renaissance. I’m pleased to read your comments about the workplace and our upgraded benefits. I’m sorry, however, to read about your day-to-day experience in terms of tools, career advancement and, of course, pay. There’s no magic wand we can wave to fix all those issues at once, but we take this feedback seriously and will continue to work to improve the overall opportunity for our team. Know also that content is critical to the success of our solutions. Again, thank you for this review and for your commitment to Renaissance. — Mike Evans, Interim CEO

Pros

Some of the most amazing people you’ll ever work with. Generally supportive peers. Leaders are kind and not intentionally toxic. Strong brand recognition and a variety of solutions to enable solution selling.

Cons

The culture of the organization seems to have succumbed to the broader climate surrounding politics and education. Immense pressure is placed on sales team to deliver in saturated territories with beyond unachievable quotas for some and cake quotas for others. No cost of living increases, lots of layoffs and unclear path for growth with an egregious lack of transparency from leadership about the glaring issues. NONE of this seems intentional or malicious-it just seems like a lot of behaviors caused by extreme desperation.
