Oppressive, zero-excellence, zero-respect environment, career stopper (India) - Senior Consultant Roland Berger Employee Review

Pros

Global brand (competitive with the MBBs), highly quality conscious. There is close to nil exposure to overseas work unless its internal bodyshopping, so this pro is a bit over-rated for the India business

Cons

The India practice is 'led' by a disjoint set of partners (the good ones left) with a apathy for globally expected norms like respect for colleagues and integrity to clients. The practice has almost no knowledge collateral and basically reverse engineers tools and reports, with tweaks to claim originality. The rule of thumb is to drown a client in pointless volume (of words, slides, artefacts) to justify existence. Most employees are clamoring for the exits, but find themselves of low interest to the wider industry due to obsolescence. Leadership resorts to guaranteed deferred payouts to hang onto the middle of the pyramid.

Dear former colleague, As Managing Partner for our Indian offices, I experience a totally different market positioning and culture. We are currently helping our clients navigate complex, strategic questions across a range of industries and functional areas. These clients include marquee international names, established domestic players as well as new age businesses. The repeat business that we get from these clients is a testimony of Roland Berger's excellence. A strong cooperation among Partners within our global organization as well as respect and integrity in our interactions with employees and clients are key for our success. In the past few months itself, we have executed multi-country projects with clients and colleagues in Middle East, SE Asia, China, Germany, USA etc. We have several initiatives to foster a culture of mutual trust and empathy which I personally monitor very closely. We also have several initiatives to enable personal and professional growth– e.g. fostering work-life-balance, further investing in personal development through local and international coaching etc. Most of our former colleagues continue to be in touch and often convey appreciation for the learning and camaraderie during their time with Roland Berger. A good relationship with our alumni is crucial for us and personally matters to me. Please feel free to reach out to us. I am always happy to talk. Saumitra Sehgal

Pros

Good culture Great mix of work (lots of strategy / interesting projects) Good opportunity

Cons

Promotion cycle can be slower than some peer companies (RB does not have a strong up or out model, which helps some people and hurts others)
