Cons
Here I will be mentioning about Downstream/Buyer team, because I don't know much about how the other teams work. 1) This is a godaweful product developed during dotcom era. In my short time here, I couldn't find anything new and worthy to learn. Every framework, technology, process used here is outdated and clumsy. 2) The nature of work is mainly defect-fixing. If you write one line of code, it produces at least 10 defects. 3) The code is hopelessly patchy and ungainly, without proper structure and design. No trace of developer documentation. Due to this, it has to be guarded like the treasure guarded by demons. 4) Interaction with TRP (tech review panel) will test your nerves. TRP are supposed to be code reviewers. They do nothing else. But they are extremely egoistic and revengeful. 5) Every time you code, you face three problems. One, you will have to prove to TRP that it works in lots of scenarios they concoct out of thin air. Two, they treat you like a fugitive, who has committed the crime to write some code. Three, since you have no option except follow their order, if the solution they suggest doesn't work, its on you to prove that with data. Sometimes they seem to torture you just for fun. Its a humiliating and disgusting experience. 6) Downstream is mainly run by just three people who act like power center. If you don't align with them or if you are a threat to their hegemony, they will quickly conspire against you, stamp you and get rid of you. This is a case SAP ethics committee needs to look into. This team has the highest attrition rate inside Ariba. 7) The managers are a bunch of XL sheeters. They manage an excel sheet given to them as though it is their life. They treat everyone except TRP without any respect/consideration whatsoever. 8) There is no concept of Career at Ariba. You are just a dev/qa resource. You can be tossed from here to there without as much as a hi howdy. Nobody checks with you, whether the work is in line with your aspirations or not. HR is just a recruitment agency. 9) Processes are followed for the heck of it. Nothing makes sense. There are entire bunch of people who management the processes. 10) There is no open communication of actions and decisions, mainly because they are generally politically motivated. Depends on whether the "top three" like you or not. They may not like you just because you didn't bend your head to honor them the last time they passed by you. 11) Some people who have stayed long enough have become thick skinned at the insults and injustice, but the new people with good background suffer the most. In the end you will realize that you have been running like a lab-rat in a cage, without purpose, but in lot of pain, just waiting for the end of it.
