Used to be a good company, now not so much - Systems Engineer SSL Employee Review

Pros

I met some really awesome people at SSL and gained valuable industry experience; however, innovation has stalled and most of the talented engineers have left the company.

Cons

If you haven't been working here for 10+ years and aren't super tight with the right people, there is no path for career development. There is a culture of seniority over qualification, so don't be surprised to see less qualified, but more senior people get promoted over you. While there are a few solid senior engineers who would mentor you, most senior engineers are so insecure about their job, they will go on a personal mission to make your life miserable, especially if you are in the minority demographics (i.e. not a white male). They will assume that new to the company = no experience, and treat you with utter disrespect. If you google SSL + Maxar, you will get the recent turmoil surrounding this company. Management think reorg is the solution to every single problem, which means there's a reorg every 6 months or so. As a result, the company has been hemmoraging talent...and once you start to see the people you respect leave, it's a pretty darn good sign to follow their lead. Pay is laughably pathetic, and any request of promotion/raise will be deferred citing "reorg." You can get at least 25% raise, if not 50% for the same kind of job anywhere else in the Bay Area.

Pros

-very nice coworkers -company sponsors a ton of internal training - internal switching around jobs is encouraged- that is awesome - management tries to give anonymous surveys and do R2D2 efforts to help the company - if you work hard and manage time well, you can get away with regular 40-45 work hours most weeks - people willing to help and answer questions

Cons

- very slow.. HR is slow, parts take forever to get ordered.. things to be expected of a larger aerospace company - moral is SUPER low currently. Most of my group is depressed with the current job, where the company is headed, and our career opportunities at Loral - management doesn't know how to make company more efficient - unfortunately we don't get bonuses or raises, although it's a possibility this year - company doesnt recognize people too often. If you do well, you get more work even if you are newer to the group - performance-based bonus, if given, is based on how many years you've worked at Loral (what sense is this making?) - Pay low, benefits keep slipping every half year something major gets cancelled (worsen plan for glasses and PPO medical plan this round..) - before major layoffs, severance package is usually worsened - no innovation at all - it's unfair to blame the company here, as this is primarily driven by the customer (everyone wants proven parts)
