Pros

Acting as a medical scribe gives you direct contact with the medical field and allows you to learn from the doctors you work with. I work in the emergency department and I have seen everything from a cold, to trauma, to strokes and cardiac arrests. This job has exposed me to just about as much as I can get before entering medical school. I love the atmosphere and the willingness of the doctors to educate the scribes. You're basically getting paid to shadow, but you're actually involved in the process rather than a "shadow" of the doctors.

Cons

Some physicians have been proven as hard to work with, but this will happen in any job. It has taught me how to deal with difficult people which will greatly benefit my career. It is sometimes difficult to find coverage for shifts, but again, this happens everywhere. One bigger complaint is that our chief scribe was not very helpful or accommodating when it came to shift coverage due to an emergency. Car troubles or deaths in the family apparently do not count as a need for emergency shift coverage.
