They kept adding more and more new rules. When I was hired, I was told I could work on homework in between my patrols - especially being night shift. I was 2nd shift 4pm to midnight. It was in an almost empty building most of the time. Most people if not all people except cleaning crew had gone home when I started. When I actually started, they said I couldn’t work on homework even though I was hired on this premise. Shortly after being hired, they kept adding more and more rules and more and more work (which is not worth it when the pay is so little - $16.48 an hour is literally synonymous with fast food pay now a days. It used to be do 15-30 min patrol once every 2 hour blocks. After working there for 4.5 months, we were required to patrol nonstop or sit at the front desk nonstop. The whole point of night watchman security is to appease the insurance companies. We have people in the building to do so. Endless patrol doesn’t help. Neither does not allowing your staff to not work on homework who is just sitting around if not patrolling. The whole point of night security (which most no one wants to do) is it’s suppose to be laid back since no one wants to do it. There are plenty of other night watchman security jobs that pay more and are laid back. If you can’t allow night security this, you’re not going to keep anyone in this position. Night security is for college students or people who want a laid back job. In exchange they are willing to tolerate giving up their nights and accepting low pay. If you take that away, you should at least raise the pay so it’s worth the effort.
