Pros

The owner coordinates occasional free lunches.

Cons

First off - let me start with saying that this is the most dysfunctional company I have ever seen, let alone worked for and it is all due to the owners. The owners are a husband and wife team that are very much into micromanaging EVERYTHING, especially the processes that they are not qualified to lead. They do not seem like a couple, more like reluctant business partners that do not like to speak to each other. The husband runs Smartrend Manufacturing Group which buys mechanical parts from overseas and sells them to the automotive industry. The wife runs First Light Safety Products. They make school bus signs. She is super unpredictable, unstable and has shockingly bad people skills. She acts like a high school student, picking and choosing which employees she likes and treating them differently according to which list you’re on. I’ve witnessed her walk out of meetings without notice while someone is talking to her. Very catty behaviour. If you are a professional in your field, you will get hired but she will micromanage your tasks into an ineffective waste of time then blame you for it. If your expert skills in your field teach the owner something new, she becomes insecure and will fire you. If you look disinterested in a meeting, she will fire you. She genuinely fired people on the regular for this. At company standup meetings they gleefully announce how many people were let go for not exhibiting the level of excitement for the business that they want to see. It’s not based on your actual work or deliverables being met - they care about the optics more than actual performance. The owner’s ego needs constant stroking. This ensures only inept/desperate employees stay employed as they do not threaten the owner’s ego. I know what you’re thinking, what about HR? They must surely advocate on behalf of the employees. The single HR person is the owners BFF and doesn’t appear to be formally trained in HR practices. She spends most of her time collecting gossip (including eavesdropping on closed door meetings) and bringing it to the owner’s attention so the two of them can call people into the owner’s office and discipline them. It’s like the movie Mean Girls but Regina George is your boss. The production staff is made up of almost exclusively immigrants that sometimes rely on the company for their work visa. I never saw a single production employee smile. There is no casual conversation while they work. It looks like an emotionless sweatshop. Everyone lives in constant fear of upsetting the owner as the penalty for that is termination and you never know what will upset her that day. She changes her mind so often and without rational reason. The turnover is terrible. Nobody is safe when the owner is in a bad mood, which is often. Depending on the owner’s mood, anywhere from zero to 3 people get fired a week and this is a small company. The owner will send out inflammatory emails and then recall them. She sends Teams messages with false information in them, usually by accident and then will go back and edit them but pretend like she never made the error and that the recipient is lying. Very petty, insecure behaviour. This toxic environment leads to just the desperate and the downtrodden being left behind. If you do not bring new ideas to the table and only carry out the owner’s ADHD-fuelled spastic reactions each day, you will survive for at least a year. If you decide to use your experience, and training, you will be let go very quickly. If you are a professional, STAY AWAY!

Pros

The staff were very friendly.

Cons

I'll preface by saying that I have never once in my life felt the need to take time out of my day to write a review of a company I've worked for. That is until now; to warn any potential new hire of the abhorrent behaviour and practices at this company. I will stick to facts alone to not pass along my own personal bias. The turnover rate is incredibly high. Within several months, 18 office staff have come and gone out of roughly 45 +\- office personnel primarily due to dismissal but a few left on their own accord. Approximately 40% turnover in just the office during my time with the company. The quickest turnover I've witnessed was within 4 hours of starting and being let go. I cannot speak for production but rest assured, you'll be told that turnover has stabilized as previously it was even more frequent from what "senior" employees have said. Most tenures at the company are less than 2 years. Hence my "senior" remark in quotations. That's if you make it past 1 year without being wrongfully dismissed; having nothing to do with your performance. Leaving staff to retrain new hires constantly instead of improving their processes. Additionally causing staff to take on extra workloads and to do work outside the scope of their role and/or experience to cover off gaps in operations. Which in turn causes further delays, inefficiencies, worker burnout and increased risk in human error of which you will absolutely be held accountable for. The owners will readily doctor and change control documents to pass external audits, without a second thought. Which is completely unethical and illegal falsification of documents and should be investigated further. Trust me when I say staff have no option not to comply without fear of being reprimanded. If this is how the owners conduct business around an individual that is not in their inner circle at the company, I can only imagine the lengths they'll go to and things that are said behind closed doors. You will absolutely be pressured by the owners to do work on your personal time. In fact it was so prevalent and expected that most office employees would work through their breaks every day, do overtime without pay and would feel obligated to do so to keep up with the ever present and ever changing demands of leadership. On more than 1 occasion I was told "to do the research or work at home in the evening" and not on company time. Which again, is illegal unpaid labour and should be investigated. unfortunately this is the norm here therefore you should absolutely expect to do unpaid work in any office job within this company if you accept their offer. Want to get promoted and work your way up in the company? Expect to be on the clock constantly. Evenings, weekends, early morning, holidays. If the owners are up working, so should you, is the unspoken expectation you'll have looming over your shoulder to get that promotion. The comments from all the other negative reviews over the years are all still relevant today. The favouritism to certain employees, the fake excellent 5 star reviews all left on the same date, the toxic narcissistic, micromanagement from the owners, the hidden discrimination, the pettiness from the VP due to her raging ego, and the overall awful morale of their employees are all still ongoing issues for this company. If I were an investor I would reconsider partnering with them. A message to the many good employees keeping this company functioning: You were some of the most innovative, resourceful, tenacious, and intelligent people I've worked with in my career. You absolutely deserve better. To the owners: pay your staff all their unpaid labour and stop pointing fingers at everyone else for the issues in your company. Take a good hard look in the mirror and know that the toxic and fearful company culture that plagues SMG is directly caused by your leadership. And is not for one second the fault of the staff you repeatedly chew up and spit back out.

Pros

Nothing nice to say here

Cons

Please listen to the negative reviews. The owners of this company are terrible people and its not worth the money they will offer. I've seen people lose there jobs on the spot for no reason. Avoid, avoid, avoid.
